Beginner Band Syllabus

  Course Description

  

The Beginner Band Curriculum is designed to go from the most basic starting level.  Students can survive this class, if they practice, even if they have never played an instrument before.

The Class will start on the first week of August, even if the first day of the week is still in July.  We then have two lessons per week until school starts.  After school starts, the class meets once a day and students have one semi-private lesson per week. 

For specific information, ask your child or e-mail the staff. 

All Junior High band students are required to attend four lessons per grading period.  Please see the grading requirements.

 

   Text Book

 We use the "Accent on Achievement," Book I.  This book now comes with a CD to play along with, make sure yours has the CD when you buy.  Scores from skill evaluations are used for grading. 

 

   Objectives/State Goals

   State Goal #25:  Know the language of the arts.

  •      Identify and describe basic musical terms and symbols (e.g. staff, clef, meter) as they relate to students' individual instruments. 
  •     To play Bb, Eb, Ab, and F major scales and their companion scale in thirds. 
  •     Chromatic scale is to be played--one-octave, with music.

   State Goal #26:  Through creating and performing, understand how works of art are

                               produced.

  •      Read and interpret traditional music notation in various pieces as they relate to the students' individual instruments.
  •      Play with expression and accuracy a variety of music appropriate to the beginner player.

   State Goal #27:  Understand the role of the arts in civilizations, past and present.

  •      Identify and describe the relationship between the arts and the places we experience them.
  •      Identify and describe how the arts communicate the similarities and differences of people, places, and times.

 

   Grading

 

        70 %  tests, quizzes, and evaluations

        10 %  practice log with 60 or 90 min/wk and signed by a parent

        10 %  attending prescribed number of lessons/quarter

        10 %  attending the performance (concert) that is required

      100 %

      

        Students are encouraged  to seek help from the instructors when needed.  Please

        ask for help.

   Performances/Course Outline

   The band will play at two concerts.  The performance dates are listed on the Beginner Band Index.  Performance dates will steer many of the class projects and performances should be viewed as a final assessment for large units of material.  All performances are mandatory, please view the grading section of this page.
